A NETWORK especially for women in business is gradually attracting more members from the city.
The national program is in its fifth year and launched locally four months ago.
Titled Exeter Women’s Business Club, the group holds monthly meetings at Basepoint Business Centre on Marsh Barton Trading Estate.
Each session is hosted by social media and online PR specialist Sam Gilson.
The 36-year-old, from Kenton, near Exeter, runs SGA Marketing, which employs four people. Sam has more than seven years’ experience in search engine optimisation and on-line PR and training across the county. She said: “There was a great need for a club in Exeter where like-minded women could share their experience and knowledge.
“Meeting and working with other business women provides amazing benefits, from the most obvious, such as business leads and potential customers, to equally valuable benefits, like personal support, inspiration, motivation, ideas and advice.
“But we are not here to merely gain direct business opportunities, but to pass on some of our knowledge.”
The group has eight members, ranging from an accountant, a solicitor and a health expert.
A typical session would start with introductions, if there were new members present, then the group would move on to a discussion topic over lunch. Sam explained: “In our last session I discussed with the group how, and when, to use social media to benefit a business. Everyone found it productive.
“In the next session we will discuss the topic of how people can gain financial investment in their business.
“We try to choose something that will benefit the entire group,” said Sam. “Everyone is welcome to suggest topics.”
Interaction between members is a vital part of the sessions.
“The group concentrates more on sharing knowledge and experiences which can benefit each other. We don’t want to meet just to exchange business cards, or have one person lecture the rest of the group. We are hoping to form good business relationships too.”
The group is looking to recruit new members. Sam said: “We need members from other types of businesses who can share their experiences, extensive knowledge base and, of course, contacts.”
Membership prices range from Pounds 50 to Pounds 250, depending on which package you and your business want to opt for.

CUTTING public spending will help local businesses and make the planning process more democratic.
As a Conservative I believe that families and businesses are better off when taxes are low.
Over 80 per cent of people who work in my constituency are employed by small and mediumsized businesses.
Those businesses play an important role in supporting our communities, providing local jobs and give our high streets their character and charm.
Instead of being punished by high taxes and red tape under Labour, they will benefit from the cuts to corporation tax rates and National Insurance.
In the long term, taxes on business can only be kept low by cutting public spending.
While this means some tough decisions need to be taken, everyone should welcome the savings from scrapping the regional development agencies and regional planning targets.
Not only will money be saved by removing this wasteful layer of bureaucracy, it will mean that unaccountable bureaucrats can no longer interfere in the planning process.
All too often our towns and villages have had appalling developments foisted upon them after regional planning policies have helped developers push through their plans against the wishes of local communities.
Local people across Essex feel they have no say in the developments.
My mailbag has been full of letters from residents concerned about the proliferation of gypsy and traveller sites in the area.
One application in Tolleshunt Knights has already been refused by local planners but the applicant has gone to appeal holding out hope that Labour’s anti-democratic regional policies would save them.
Now those targets are gone, this application should be refused to show communities fighting against traveller sites and other unwelcome developments that democracy is being restored to planning.

ATLANTA — Already reeling from a credit crunch and economic slowdown, residential contractors now find themselves in the middle of a fight between their trade association and the company that sells the worker’s compensation coverage they are required to carry.
This week, members of the board of the Home Builders Association of Georgia voted to sponsor a coup to topple the leadership of the insurance company the trade group spawned in 1992. They’ll urge their members to use their positions as policyholder-owners of the mutual insurance company to vote out Builders Insurance’s board for padding their compensation, reducing dividends and withholding money from the association.
For its part, Builders Insurance says the fight is over the association’s inability to charge yearly dues of $400-750 once the insurer stopped requiring policyholders to join the trade group in April. Now they can buy coverage if they pay dues of just $60 to a rival organization, the Contractors Benefit Association.
Also in April, the company stopped paying royalties to the Home Builders, a 28 percent loss in the association budget.
Bill Beazley, owner of Bill Beazley Homes Inc. of Augusta, is among those revolting because he contends Builders Insurance directors — including four former association presidents — are looting the company through their overcompensation. Beazley served on the insurance board when it was founded to provide a reliable and affordable source of coverage for contractors during a weak economy.
He said association members weren’t paying attention as the company changed because of who the directors were.
“You can’t imagine how these guys were respected, so respected you didn’t question them,” he said. “… Greed is like dope. You start taking it, and it gets worse and worse.”
